About me

Dr Lizzie Hill is a Clinical Physiologist with significant experience in Sleep Medicine in adults and children within the public, private and third sectors. She was awarded her PhD by Research at The University of Edinburgh in 2016 for her study of prevalence and treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with Down syndrome. Having worked in Edinburgh in NHS, private medicine and University roles for over 20 years, Lizzie joined the University of Oxford Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute in 2020, where she was a Departmental Lecturer on the Oxford Online Programme in Sleep Medicine.

Lizzie is currently a Senior Lecturer in Sleep Physiology at UWE Bristol, joining the team in November 2023 to lead the new PGCert Sleep Medicine programme, commissioned and funded by NHS England/Health Education England to address the gaps in the sleep medicine workforce.

Her specialist areas include assessment and monitoring of sleep, sleep-related breathing disorders, and the wider impact of sleep at a societal level. Research interests include diagnosis and treatment of disorders in children and adults, with and without intellectual disabilities, with a particular focus on physiological measurement of sleep.

Lizzie has held the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential since 2005, and gained the European Sleep Research Society Somnologist-Technologist (EST) credential at its first sitting in 2014. She is registered at M-Level with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) in Sleep. Lizzie completed a PgCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the University of Oxford, gaining a pass with Distinction and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Lizzie is currently a Society Rep for The Physiological Society, acting as a point of contact for staff who wish to learn more about the Society's activities and funding opportunities. She is a past President of the European Society of Sleep Technologists (2016-2022) and previously served on the Examination Subcommittee of the European Sleep Research Society (2015-2022). Lizzie served on the Executive Committee of the British Sleep Society from 2011-2021, latterly as Education Lead.

Although currently focussing on set-up and delivery of the PGCert Sleep Medicine programme, Lizzie is open to opportunities to collaborate on research and is happy to discuss the integration of sleep assessment and interventions into new and existing research projects.
