About me

Marine Shao joined the Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) in 2019 as a research associate as part of the Appearance Printing European Advanced Research School (ApPEARS) project.  This Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie funded Innovative Training Network (MSCA-ITN) comprises 7 leading universities and research institutes across Europe training a cohort of 15 Early Stage Researchers who will form the next generation of scientists, engineers, designers and entrepreneurs in the field of visual appearance and printing using 3D and 2.5D printing techniques as well as extending further the understanding of the appearance of prints from 2 to 3 dimensions.

Marine completed her Masters in Engineering at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in 2019, with a specialisation in bio-engineering.

Her doctoral research project at UWE explores how 3D technologies can be used to develop organ simulations which look and feel like real body parts mimicking the appearance, elasticity and consistency of human tissue. By creating organ simulators that look and feel real, surgical training becomes more representative of real life and can ultimately aid in lessening patient risk providing vital training tools for surgeons to practice on in a safe environment.  Through 3D printing, moulding of different types of silicones, and image processing, Marine is developing affordable surgical simulators for bile duct exploration. Combining those fabrication techniques with image processing offers the possibility to achieve both a good tactile feedback and an accurate appearance reproduction. This project has received press coverage in TechSpark and 3Dprintingindustry.com

Marine's supervisory team includes David Huson (CFPR), Carinna Parraman (CFPR), and James Clark (Royal Cornwall hospitals NHS Trust).  They have presented the poster Physical Patient Simulators for Surgical Training: A Review, at the London Imaging Meeting 2020.
