About me

Dr Nazmul Karim is an Associate Professor for Novel Print Processes and Materials (Graphene) at the Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR), UWE Bristol (UK). With about 12 years of industry and academic experiences in graphene science and textile related technologies, and a passion for getting research out of the lab and into real world applications, currently leading a research team to investigate into graphene and other 2D materials-based technologies aimed at developing scalable and cost-effective next generation wearable electronic textiles (e-textiles), and environmentally sustainable functional clothing. Dr Karim's team is also looking into developing smart, sustainable and multifunctional fibre-reinforced composites.

Prior to that (2015-2019), Dr Karim led graphene-based printed and coated high performance functional clothing and wearable e-textiles research activities at the National Graphene Institute (NGI) of University of Manchester (UK) with Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Kostya S Novoselov. Dr Karim also completed PhD (2015) and MSc (2011) from the same university. Before that, he worked three years (2008-2010) for BASF, the world leading chemical company after graduating from Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTex) in 2008. His research on graphene-enabled textiles and wearables have attracted significant commercial and research interests, which led to co-founding start-up companies.  

Dr Karim's lab at CFPR is always looking for highly motivated and skilled individuals who are interested in pursuing PhD and post-docs, and who wants to create novel and innovative wearable e-textiles, smart fibre-reinforced composites, and sustainable functional clothing to makes human life safer and healthier. Our multi-disciplinary work has exciting opportunities for working at newly set-up state-of-the art laboratory in a number of high-profile areas:

  • Wearable electronic textiles (sensors, energy generating and storage devices)
  • Inkjet-printed graphene and other 2D heterostructure-based wearables
  • Sustainable and functional protective clothing
  • Recycled materials-based textiles and composites

The current funded projects include partnership PhD on "Graphene-based flexible textile supercapacitor for wearable electronic applications" and ACE/HAS cross-faculty grant to investigate "Early Detection of Hypoglycemia in Type 1 Diabetes via Graphene-Based Wearable Electronic Textiles."
