About me

Author of over 120 refereed papers, 14 contributions to edited works and over 110 conference papers. I am co-author of books such as Strategy and Performance: Achieving Competitiveness in the Global Market Place, and Public Private Partnerships in Practice. I co-edit the Journal of Strategy & Management, and the Journal of Family Business Management and serve on the editorial boards of several journals including Technovation and International Journal of Sustainable Strategic Management.
Previously Professor of Strategy at Middlesex University, I began my career in the public sector as the youngest local authority and harbour board chief executive in Ireland. I then undertook further post-graduate studies in the UK, after which I held chief officer positions in UK local government heading departments ranging from economic development, industrial development and strategic planning.
Following a public sector career, I pursued my doctoral studies at Middlesex University and was appointed Professor of Strategy a short period after completion of his PhD.  I was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences in 2011 and a Fellow of the British Academy of Management in 2017. I am currently Co-Vice Chair of the British Academy of Management with a focus on Capacity building
In the role of Associate Dean [Research and Innovation], I have has oversight of the development and implementation of the Faculty wide research strategy in alignment with the University’s research strategy. I have responsibility for postgraduate research and for developing networks to maximise opportunities for enterprise and innovation through public and civic engagement and knowledge transfer and exchange. I chair the Faculty’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee and represent the Faculty on the University’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee.
