About me

Bid developer and writer, focusing on Creative and Digital Technologies and working across all the UWE faculties to support research and bidding activity.

My background is in archaeology and heritage. From 2011-19 I was a Director at Northlight Heritage in Glasgow, a non-profit organisation (formerly part of York Archaeological Trust) aiming to engage wider audiences in heritage in order to deliver public benefits and address social needs. My remit ranged across blending heritage with the arts, creating innovative mechanisms for active learning, conducting community engagement and developing heritage interpretation. I co-designed, fund-raised for and managed a portfolio of projects, several in partnership with HEIs in support of their knowledge exchange and impact agendas. I also led consultancy and research for public and third sector organisations such as Historic Environment Scotland, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and several National Heritage Fund-supported Landscape Partnerships.

Previously (1997-2011), I worked at Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division, where I led fieldwork and research projects in both commercial (developer-led) and community contexts, working around Scotland as well as in France and England. My PhD thesis 'Writing People into the Landscape' created highly textured written narratives for the long-term habitation of Highland Scotland. My long-held interest in writing developed from a brief early career in print journalism.

Area of expertise

Archaeology, heritage, community engagement
