About me

I studied for a BA (Hons) degree as an External Student at the University of London, followed by a PhD on the plays of Margaret Cavendish and Aphra Behn at Birkbeck. I have taught literature and drama at a number of adult education establishments, American and Canadian exchange programmes, and universities, including Birkbeck, the University of Southampton New College and South Bank University, before starting at UWE in 2000.

Area of expertise

My research interests centre on women writers, and twentieth-century British drama, especially that from 1914-1950, and the 1990s. I have published British Theatre & Performance 1900 to 1950 for the Methuen Critical Companions’ series, and I am currently working on British Theatre of the Second World War. As well as Cavendish and Behn, I have also written on the plays of Dodie Smith, Esther McCracken, Daphne du Maurier, Enid Bagnold, Agatha Christie, April de Angelis, Judy Upton, Sarah Kane, Claire Dowie, and Eve Ensler, amongst others.
