About me
Industrialist
I am an industrial Chartered Engineer with over 38 years of industrial experience gained at iconic companies: BAE Systems (13 yrs), STMicroelectronics (formerly INMOS, 13 yrs), Dyson (11 yrs) and Oxa (1 yr).
I have always been very interested in supporting young engineers with their career growth; supporting 15 engineers achieve CEng status.
Academic Roles
Throughout my career I have supported collaboration between industry and academia. I have held roles of:
- Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham
- RAEng Visiting Professor at Imperial College London
My work with UWE dates back to 1990's. This work included supporting a robotic demonstration for the 2000 celebration at the Millennium Dome that was sponsored by BAE Systems. Here the Grey Walter tortoises Elmer and Elsie were updated and displayed at the Millennium Dome Exhibition.
Academic Research Support
I have chaired 4 Advisory Boards for EPSRC/ERDF funded projects totalling £25M. I have also set-up/supported 4 PhD candidates over the last 5 years.
Academic Teaching Support
I have supported teaching at 25 UK and 13 International Universities, covering 95 different cohorts and over 3500 students.
Area of expertise
My current role is a Product Manager at Oxa, where I am part of a team developing robots to work on solar farms. Prior that that, I worked at Dyson for 11 years as a Senior Principal Engineer researching, developing and bringing to World-Wide sales two robo-vacs, the 360VisNav and the 260Heurist.
My early career research contributions was to decentralised systems and navigation algorithms, specifically Simultaneous Localisation and Map Building (SLAM). I combined these research areas providing early concept demonstrations of decentralised SLAM.
