About me

Dr Samuel Baffour Kyei is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at UWE Bristol. He leads teaching on the BSc Public Health programme and teaches across several MSc Public Health modules. His work sits where public health meets the social and behavioural factors that decide who is protected and who is missed.

His research concerns the behavioural and social dimensions of prevention among underserved, mobile and transient populations, alongside his continuing work on the built environment, greenspace and mental health. He uses mixed methods, and participatory and co-production approaches where the people affected help set the questions, the methods and the use of the findings. This work examines how risk, trust, stigma, mobility and access shape exposure, prevention and uptake, and it designs interventions that reduce health inequalities. His doctoral research at UWE Bristol examined how students use campus greenspace and how this affects their mental health, using longitudinal surveys, validated mental health scales and qualitative methods.

Before joining UWE he was a Local Authority Research Practitioner in the Evidence and Population Health Intelligence Team at South Gloucestershire Council. There he supported health needs assessment and public health intelligence work, built research capacity across the council, contributed to in-house evidence generation, and examined the quality of research governance. He gained direct experience of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, neighbourhood health planning, and the commissioning and evaluation of local evidence, including work with voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations.

He also held an Honorary Senior Research Associate role at the University of Bristol. Earlier, as Data and Insight Manager at Severn Wye Energy Agency, he built practical skills in carbon footprinting, data modelling, CRM and reporting with Power BI.

He also works with practitioners and community partners to build the skills to design and carry out their own research, from setting the questions through to analysing and using the findings. He has been invited to present his research to the Local Authority Research Practitioner network, which spans more than eighty local authorities, and to Public Health Wales and other public health practitioner networks. In his previous role he contributed to NIHR funding bids, including the NIHR Grassroots funding. He is a member of the NIHR Reviewer Development Scheme, and a Commonwealth Shared Scholar.

He holds a PhD in Built and Natural Environment from UWE Bristol, an MSc in Public Health from the University of Worcester and a BSc in Biological Sciences Education.
