About me

Currently recruiting PhD students in the areas of water, communities and resilience; urban water governance; alternative water supply systems. If you are an employer who can bring 50% funding to a PhD project, please get in touch with me.

I am Associate Professor of Environmental Hazards and Community Resilience within the Centre for Water, Communities and Resilience.

My interdisciplinary research takes a complex systems perspective, explores multiple theoretical frameworks and uses mixed methods to examine different types (social, ecological, technical) and scales (centralised, decentralised, building, community, city, region) of water system. My work considers a range of environmental extremes and embeds governance, beyond behaviour change, participatory approaches and public engagement practice, as well as entrepreneurialism – I established 'RainShare Ltd' in 2014, promoting community-based roof runoff sharing. My past research encompassed a portfolio of projects on sustainable water management in urban environments demonstrated through international collaborative publications on water efficiency, water resources, alternative water supply systems, policy, service innovation and university-society partnerships, amongst others, using methods such as model evaluation, integrated modelling, performance assessment, questionnaires, Delphi, participatory social network analysis, interviews, workshops, discourse and content analysis and business engagement.
I have a PhD in Engineering with Social Science from the University of Exeter (where I also spent 10 years in various roles), a MRes in Science and Technology Studies (Exeter), a MRes in Earth and Atmospheric Science (Reading) and a BSc (hons) in Geography with Astronomy (Plymouth). I am a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (C.WEM) and a Chartered Environmentalist with the Society for the Environment (C.Env), as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
