About me
Broadly my research is concerned with language
and cognitive skills that underpin literacy development of children from
diverse language backgrounds. I have conducted research on all key aspects of
language and literacy development including vocabulary, grammar, listening
comprehension, word recognition, spelling, reading comprehension, and text
writing. My research programme focuses on children from monolingual backgrounds
(e.g., Turkish and English) as well as those who speak English as an additional
language (EAL) and is essentially cross-disciplinary integrating research
techniques and theoretical approaches from psychology (cognitive science), linguistics, and education.
Over the recent years, my interests have expanded to
consider the cognitive
effects of bilingualism and the ways in which strengths and weaknesses in
cognitive and language skills interact to influence reading comprehension and
academic attainment in both monolingual and bilingual/multilingual groups.
