About me
Dr Shamas Tabraiz is a Lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering at UWE Bristol. He earned his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Newcastle University as a Commonwealth Scholar and went on to complete postdoctoral research at Canterbury Christ Church University and Imperial College London.
His expertise spans water and wastewater engineering, sustainable infrastructure, waste-to-resource recovery, and environmental biotechnology, with a particular focus on greenhouse gas mitigation, biofilm engineering, and antimicrobial resistance. Alongside academia, he has gained significant industrial experience as a Consultant Water Engineer and Water Process Design Engineer, contributing to the design and optimization of treatment systems and water and wastewater infrastructure. He has collaborated with UK water utilities and industry partners on pioneering solutions that connect fundamental research with practical engineering applications.
Dr Tabraiz has published extensively, authoring research articles, reviews, and book chapters in leading international outlets. He also contributes to the academic community as an Associate Editor and Guest Editor for international journals in environmental engineering and biotechnology, and he has been recognised with the Royal Academy of Engineering Global Talent award.
Area of expertise
Dr. Tabraiz is committed to active, problem-based, and project-based learning, integrating his research and consultancy experience into teaching. He has taught across undergraduate and postgraduate levels in subjects including Water and Wastewater Engineering, Hydrology and Drainage, Environmental Microbiology, Industrial Wastewater Management, and Ethics and Sustainability in Engineering. His teaching practice emphasises preparing students with the technical expertise and problem-solving skills needed for real-world engineering challenges.
