About me

Stephen works across the institution to support research impact, helping to translate academic outcomes into tangible real-world benefits through commercialisation, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.

He is part of a team committed to advancing innovation and bringing to market the ground-breaking research and technologies developed within the University’s academic community. His role focuses on identifying and evaluating new technologies, negotiating licence agreements with industry partners, and managing the University’s intellectual property portfolio.

Stephen has a background in mechanical engineering, which underpins his practical understanding of technology development and its pathway to application. Prior to his current role, he was a Senior Research Technician at UWE, where he led the engineering team on the Gates Foundation-funded Urine-Tricity project. This work focused on advancing Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology toward commercial sustainability. He was responsible for the design and manufacture of MFC stacks, energy harvesting systems, and prototypes using novel materials and production techniques, as well as planning and conducting field trials in challenging, low-resource environments to evaluate and refine system performance.
