About me

I am proud to be the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences here at UWE Bristol.  I work with excellent and inspiring colleagues and over 8000 aspiring students in an outstanding Faculty. I have held several senior roles at the University, with experience in leadership and management of teaching and learning, quality assurance, collaborative partnerships, planning and resources and research. I am currently a member of the University's Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees of Bristol Zoo and Bristol Health Partners and a member of the Bristol Manifesto for Race Equality Strategic Leaders Group and the Education Expert Group for Health Education England (HEE) South.

I have a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Lancaster and a PhD from the University of Wales. I am a Professor of Molecular Plant Science and was formerly the Director of the internationally-renowned Centre for Research in Plant Science here at UWE.  I have published over 120 peer reviewed articles, conference proceedings and book chapters and in 2014 was named by Thomson Reuters as a 'Highly Cited Author' in the field of Plant and Animal Sciences, being listed as in the top 1% of highly cited authors. I have collaborated extensively with colleagues at UWE, in particular Professor John Hancock and externally in the UK and internationally. My work has centred on the environmental and internal signalling processes by which plants detect drought stress and initiate adaptive responses. Highlights of my work include analysis of transcriptional responses to oxidative stress, identification of nitric oxide as a key intermediate in abscisic acid signalling in stomata and revealing nitric oxide as an effector of gravitropic responses.   My research and consultancy has been supported by the BBSRC, DEFRA, Royal Society, British Council, Leverhulme Trust, Nuffield Foundation, Commonwealth Scholarships Commission and Research Councils in Portugal and Brazil.
