Area of expertise

I am an economist with over 10 years of experience in academic and applied policy research. My areas of specialism include price formation and behaviour in agro-commodity markets, global value chain analysis, industrial policy, financialisation of corporate strategy, and the political economy of South Africa.

Before joining UWE, I was a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) and Senior Researcher for the Corporate Strategy and Industrial Development research programme at the University of the Witwatersrand.

I am a visiting research fellow at the University of Johannesburg, a Visiting Research Fellow at REPOA: Policy Research for Development, Tanzania , coordinator of the Commodity Studies Working Group of the International Initiative for Promoting Political Economy (iippe.org) and a member of Reteaching Economics (reteacheconomics.org).

I would be interested in supervising projects that involve critical engagement with orthodox economics and the pursuit of political economy analyses in the broad subject areas of food and agricultural policy; industrial policy and industrialization; commodity dependence and economic development; financial sector development and the allocation of capital; the relationship between finance, financial practices and the organisation of production and work (in particular, but not limited to, transanational supply chains and networks).

I am the programme leader for the MSc in Global Political Economy.
