About me

I’m a Chartered Marketer (MCIM) and a member of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising. I studied Art History at the University of Leicester and started my career in marketing in book publishing. I went on to launch and grow my own art course business. I ran this for 18 years, engaging an international, loyal customer base; publishing a cook book; and achieving eight features in Country Living magazine in 2011.

I’ve been teaching at UWE since 2007 when I was invited to write and deliver a short business course for creative undergraduates to learn relevant business skills for self-employment and the workplace. We’ve taken student feedback on board and adapted the sessions to their needs. We start by giving them space to think about their futures, their place in the creative economy, and also, the way values affect choices. We explore their career options and discuss what employers are looking for. We build appropriate CVs. We apply marketing, PR and communication skills by promoting our own exhibitions and events. We develop confidence to talk about ourselves and our work through guidance, short presentations and constructive feedback. We find out what’s involved to set up a business. We sometimes learn by doing with a two-day Dragons’ Den Event. We always practice interview technique and some brave students learn through role play for a live job. Every session is backed up with detailed handouts which come together as a useful guide for future reference.

I’ve worked with many business owners and charity directors to set up, improve and develop their brands, PR, marketing, communications, events and fundraising. This includes SMEs, NGOs and other charities, including launching a professional theatre. I’ve won awards for my campaigns at the Cirencester Chamber of Commerce. In 2010, 2011 and 2013, I launched, directed, promoted and grew Cotswold Open Studios, a community arts event, generating around £25k and 4,000 visitors for local creatives each time. I’ve set up and organised many events and projects from scratch. I’ve also enjoyed fundraising for worthy causes. My most recent project is as Marketing Associate, raising the profile of Artlift, an arts on prescription charity supporting people living with mental health challenges, like depression or anxiety, and / or long-term health conditions, like cancer or ME.

Marketing, PR, communications, events management and fundraising involve a very broad skillset which I enjoy sharing as an Associate Lecturer at UWE: planning, delivery and evaluation; brand development and management; CRM; reputation management; press and media relations; copy writing; storytelling; social media planning and implementation; production (writing; briefing designers, photographers and film makers; proof reading; editing; and print buying); website management; campaigning; email creation, design, send and analysis; researching new audiences; business development; managing budgets; training and presenting; negotiating; and teamworking.
I believe enterprise skills should be taught by educators with a track record of success at the coalface. I teach what I know, and I love teaching because a relevant education with the right people changes lives.
