About me

Laura is a Senior Research Fellow in Science Communication, undertaking research and teaching in the Environment, Conservation and Science Communication subject group, and Public Engagement Lead for the School of Applied Sciences.

Area of expertise

Laura has a background in geoscience and PhD in Environmental Science. With extensive experience of science communication, informal learning and outreach for underserved audiences, Laura has worked on a wide range of projects, including on communicating environmental science, engaging with natural science and heritage, creative approaches to understanding science and engaging children with science using computer games.

This includes running Science Hunters, a successful programme of projects using Minecraft to engage children with environmental science. Current and recent projects include: 

Engineering for Sustainable Societies (exploring engineering and the Sustainable Development Goals through Minecraft with support from a Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Award);

Space Missions in Minecraft (collaborating with RAL Space with support from STFC);

Working with Bristol City Council to engage children with local heritage at Kings Weston Roman Villa;

Exploring links between mapping, Earth Observation and local environments with local community groups;

Developing inclusive digital learning experiences to widen access to the geoheritage of the Brymbo Fossil Forest (with support from an AHRC IAA award).
