About me

Laura is a Senior Lecturer in STEM Education and Communication in the Department of Engineering Design and Mathematics (EDM). Laura is a member of the Science Communication Unit at UWE Bristol and lectures on the MSc in Science Communication as well as Undergraduate Science and Engineering degrees. She is the Athena Swan Lead for EDM and leads the Inspire work for the initiative for Digital Engineering Technology and Innovation.

Laura is Principal Investigator of several research projects, as well as managing communications for international research collaborations, and publishes widely on these topics.  She holds a DPhil in Psychology, and explores education outreach and live science events from a social cognitive and social identity perspective. Her research interests include evaluating public engagement practices at live science events, exploring the impact of communication for engineers, scientists and audiences, and developing involvement in research for under-served audiences. Laura's work led to the development of the UWE BoxED project for outreach in UWE Bristol, and the Curiosity Connections Bristol network.

Area of expertise

Laura's research projects include:

  • WeCount - live traffic counting by citizens (citizen science)
  • ClairCity – Citizen-led air pollution reduction in cities
  • Children as Engineers: Engineering and Society for primary schools
  • UWE Women Like Me: Mentoring for women engineers and outreach in schools.
  • Engineering Our Future: Communicating engineering in society.
  • Unkindest Cut: Entwining dance and science to explore mental health at science festivals.
  • Robots vs. Animals: Exploring the ingenuity of nature
  • Science Live: Exploring live public science events

Laura is a trained science journalist with extensive experience of working in the media and with the public. Previously, Laura was the Communications and Liaison Manager for the Centre for Brain Research, a neuroscience research and engagement centre at The University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Laura also holds a MSc in Psychology with a thesis exploring participation in the CeleBRation Choir, a choir which she set up to provide music therapy for people with communication difficulties through neurological disease. Laura has published extensively on Choral Singing Therapy and improving quality of life for people with communication disorders through brain disease. A video of her presenting at the AHRC Science in Culture Ignite event summarises this work. This research led to the development of the UWE Bristol ReVoice Choir for people with aphasia.
