About me
I am Director of Research for the School of Arts and Professor of English Literature. I have been teaching, researching and working across diverse research management portfolios at the University of the West of England since 2006.
Area of expertise
My research at UWE focuses on the American essayist, poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, about whom I've published two books, numerous essays and given even more conference papers at various places around the world. More recently I've been thinking about Emerson, metaphor and cognition, and my book, Emerson's Metaphors, was published by Lexington Books in 2023. I have also been researching pedagogies of close reading. The second edition of my student guide, Close Reading: The Basics, was published by Routledge in November 2025. My current research project is an intellectual history of the dualism between spirit and matter with particular reference to the long durée of the Anthropocene.
I am open to enquiries about doctoral supervision. I am particularly interested in supervising PhDs which concern Nineteenth Century American Literature and Intellectual History, especially Transcendentalism. I am also interested in supervising theses on Metaphor and literary studies, and Close Reading.
