About me

I am an Associate Professor of Philosophy within the School of Social Sciences at UWE. My primary research centres on political philosophy, phenomenology, and applied ethics, with a specific emphasis on unraveling the complexities of political solidarity within the European context.

A few notable achievements include authoring "The Risk of Freedom" (2016), a deep exploration of Czech philosopher and dissident Jan Patočka's political phenomenology. I've also taken on editorial roles for scholarly works like "Thinking after Europe" (2016), "Phenomenology and the Idea of Europe" (2017) and the recent "European Solidarity: Interdisciplinary Perspectives" (2023).

I've made contributions to esteemed academic publications, including the Journal of Medical Ethics (2023), Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology (2023, 2021, 2016), Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy (2021), Philosophy Now (2021), Phenomenology and Mind (2021), Studies in East European Thought (2020), Metodo (2018), Filosofický Časopis (2018), and Horizon (2016).

My ongoing initiatives span interdisciplinary horizons, most prominently a comprehensive research project centered around a problem-based approach to political solidarity. This forms the cornerstone of my new monograph, which I am currently in the process of writing. Additionally, my involvement in crafting ethical models for data access and governance is a key focus, channeled through my work within the DRAGoN research centre at UWE.

My collaborative endeavors extend to projects such as the process evaluation of the Open Data Institute's Research & Development Program, where I collaborated with colleagues from the Bristol Business School in 2020-21. Furthermore, I served as Co-Investigator for the UKRI DARE UK project GRAIMatter in 2022, which focused on guidelines and resources for AI model access from trusted research environments.

At UWE, I proudly lead the BA (Hons) Philosophy program, where my teaching portfolio currently includes modules on decolonization in theory and practice, as well as film-philosophy. My academic influence reaches beyond UWE as I held the position of Visiting Professor at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (Milan, Italy) in 2020-23.

A recent milestone is my appointment as co-Editor-in-Chief of Future Humanities, an open-access journal by Wiley. This platform spotlights the burgeoning realm of new and critical humanities, encompassing areas like digital transformation, health ethics, climate change, and new media.

Outside academia, I nurture a passion for literature and film. As a co-founder of Thought in Action, I've established a dynamic partnership between UWE Philosophy, Politics & IR, and Bristol's Watershed cinema, fostering enriching intellectual exchanges.
