About me

I am  Professor of Human Resource Management in the Faculty of Business and Law.  I joined UWE in 2015 from Queen Mary University of London.   I have extensive experience of journal editorial board membership, sitting on the boards of Gender Work and Organization, Equality and Diversity International and Work, Employment and Society (2009-15).   I am a member of the British and European Sociological Associations.  I was Chair of the European Sociological Association Research Network on ‘Gender Relations, Labour Markets and the Welfare State (RN14) (2013-19).  I was elected to Faculty Board in 2020. I am Chair of the Professoriate and Chair of the Faculty Research Ethics Committee.

Area of expertise

Much of my work has focused on the State as employer and legislator.  Most recently it has centred more directly on discrimination and inequality in the workplace, particularly in relation to the development and effectiveness of legal interventions.  In relation to this, I published a book in 2014 (with Dr. Margaret Page) Gender Equality in Public Services; Chasing the Dream, Routledge Studies in Management, Organizations and Society. I co-edited  The Handbook of Discrimination at Work published by Gower in 2011 and The Gender Pay Gap and Social Partnership in Europe published by Routledge in 2019.   I have undertaken critical research on the concepts of multiple discrimination and intersectionality, focussing recently on the impact of economic crisis, austerity, 'Brexit' and the Covid 19 pandemic.
