About me
Jim Campbell is a teacher, writer and curator with extensive experience in photographic education. He completed an MA in visual culture at Bath Spa University, where his thesis looked at narrative and gender pressures in the work of Tacita Dean. His subsequent research has considered varied topics largely focusing on the theory and practice of photography. He is interested in all idioms of photography from fine art to fashion. Jim has curated many photography exhibitions featuring the work of photographers such as Nick Knight, Wolfgang Tillmans, Britta Jaschinski, Cian Oba-Smith and Lewis Khan. Jim lectured for seven years on the Arts University Bournemouth's Professional/Commercial Photography course, before joining UWE as programme leader of BA Photography. Jim is a producer with Lost Light Recordings, a member of the Bristol Photography Research Group.
Area of expertise
Over the past 20 years Jim has been dedicated to exploring the 'personal work' of photographers and how artists can find appropriate markets and contexts for their work. He has worked with prominent Picture Editors, Stylists, Art Buyers, Curators, writers, Creative Directors, Book Designers, etc. in order to understand the nature of the image based creative industries. He has written catalogue essays for a number of artists such as Iveta Gabalina, Ben McMahon and Lewis Khan. He has also interviewed many prominent photograhers such as Elaine Constantine, Martin Parr, Amak Mahmoodian, Nadav Kander, Laura Pannack and Solve Sundsbo.
