About me
Following an early career teaching in the health service, Jon joined the University of West London as a senior lecturer in sociology, developing and leading a suite of new undergraduate sociology and health studies programmes and modules. In 2007, Jon joined Middlesex University as a senior lecturer in sociology, progressing to an associate professorship. Jon also undertook funded research for the Economic and Social Research Council and the British Academy. In June 2016, Jon joined UWE Bristol as Associate Head Department (Sociology and Criminology), and Associate Professor in Sociology, leading a successful team of ambitious staff in the further development of Sociology and Criminology at the University accross the fields of teaching, learning, research and engagement. In 2019, Jon returned to his role as an Associate Professor in Sociology
Area of expertise
Jon's earliest areas of expertise were in the fields of health and illness, with particular regard to the role played by 'race' and ethnicity in these domains. Jon's PhD was in the area of 'race' and sexuality. Subsequently, Jon's expertise broadened to engage more inclusively in the role played by social diversity in the contemporary nation state, and with a particular interest in migration. The role played by intra-EU highly skilled migration became the focus of an Economic and Social Research Council grant (with Professor Louise Ryan), 'French Capital: A Study of French Highly-Skilled Migrants in London's Financial and Business Sectors'. Subsequently Jon secured a grant (with Dr. Erin Sanders-McDonagh and Dr. Nicola Montagna) from the British Academy, exploring the role played by women in nationalist movements in the UK. Jon has recently advanced a focus on sustainability. In addition to developing modules in the Sociology of Sustainability and Green Criminology, Jon has undertaken funded research climate education and craft/artisanship.
