About me

I began my career in education working at Seven Stories - The National Centre for Children's Books. Soon after, I completed a PGCE and became a Class Teacher and then English Lead in East London. After a decade in the classroom I became a Lecturer on the Teach First Primary and Early Years PGDE at Bath Spa University . I am now Senior Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education and Co-Lead of the Early Years and Primary PGCE. I also teach on the BA Primary Education and am engaged in a number of research projects.

Area of expertise

I am passionate about all children having the right to engage in high quality educational experiences. I am particularly interested in the power of reading to transform lives and my recent research has involved evaluating a well-known literacy approach.

As a participant in the UWE New Starter Research Scheme I have been researching the motivational factors that encourage 'developing' or 'struggling' readers to read for pleasure. This work fed into the recent publication of the book 'Putting Social Justice at the Heart of Reading for Pleasure' (Carter, 2025).
