About me
I was appointed Senior Lecturer in Music Technology – Composition and Performance (fractional 0:5) at UWE in May 2013; prior to this I was an Associate Lecturer, developing and teaching the Creative Music Technology Composition and Performance module since its inauguration in 2007. I also work for the Open University, Cardiff University Lifelong Learning and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. I studied at Cardiff University and the Royal College of Music, and was awarded a PhD in Composition from Cardiff University in March 2010.
I am a composer, arranger and performer (horn, percussion and piano). My research consists of musical composition with performances including Cory Band (the world's no. 1 ranked brass band) and Orchestra of Welsh National Opera. Recent commissions and premieres comprise CityScape (Fanfare Repertoire Festival, The Netherlands, 2019), Finale! (London community choir and dance project, 2019); Brightest Day a Cloud (Corde di Gioia, Denmark, 2018), Tide and Time (Foden's Band, 2018), A different kind of urban (Open University Choir, 2017); Call (Eastern Virginia Brass, USA, 2016); The Story of St Alban (St Albans Choral Society, 2015), Mirage (Norfolk Chamber Consort, USA, 2015) and Silver Rose (Bristol City Council commemorating World War 1 centenary, Lydbrook Band, 2014). Current projects involve three commercial releases including Steven Mead and the Brighouse and Rastrick Band.
My research has also included working with OpenUp Music (www.openupmusic.org), a charity whose mission is to make orchestras accessible to young disabled musicians, and in May 2015 I was awarded a UWE Faculty of Environment and Technology Public Engagement and Outreach Award which enabled me to research repertoire and new composition for the inaugural South West Open Youth Orchestra, culminating in a performance at Bristol Cathedral featured on BBC The One Show. In 2016 I was awarded the UWE Computer Science and Creative Technology Researcher of the Year Award.
