About me
I am a Senior Lecturer for Mental Health Nursing. I am registered as a Practice Educator and Mental Health Nurse with the NMC and I have a Teaching Fellowship with the HEA. My clinical background was working in mental health forensic services. I began my journey into education by undertaking a post as a Practice Development Nurse within the forensic Services. After this post, I became the first Mental Health Practice Education Facilitator in the South West, whereby I assisted mentors to develop their skills in supporting and assessing pre-registration mental health nurses. This role also involved expanding and developing placements, to ensure high quality experiences for students. In 2003 I joined the University as a Lecturer Practitioner, to specifically develop and support an Associate Practitioner programme.
In 2005 I became a full time Senior Lecturer within the mental health team, teaching to pre-registration students. In 2009 I was appointed to the role of Programme Leader, responsible for the delivery of the nursing programme to 300 students. The role of Programme Leader has had a particular focus on curriculum development and I have led on 3 NMC re-validations, during the periods of Programme Leading. I held this post for 5 years.
In 2012, I began exploring teaching methodologies including the use of technology enhanced learning and simulation and was appointed to the role of Faculty Lead for a Virtual Patient Learning Programme - UChoose. I re-joined the Programme team, as Programme Leader in 2013. In 2015 I handed over this role to another team member and reverted to the role of Senior Lecturer. I currently work between Glenside and Gloucester Campus
I am the Department chair for National and International placement experiences for pre-registration students and have involvement in ERASMUS, where we have forged and developed close links with partners in Bergen, Norway and Lapland, Finland. Through ERASMUS we are able to have exchange agreements for both staff and students. This has involved exploring the differences in mental health practice between the countries and considering how technology can be used to help students collaboratively explore mental health practice in each other's countries.
I am currently an Academic in Practice for Gloucestershire and the Module Leader for Year One Practice. Last year, I had 2 nominations for a UWE Student Experience Award under the category of `Outstanding Teaching Award' and I was shortlisted for the VC's Excellence Award for `Inspirational Lecturer of the Year'. I was also included in the nominations and shortlisted, for the VC's Excellence Awards for the `HAS BME Project Team'.
