About me

About Me

Hello there! My name is Luke (he/him pronouns). I am a PhD researcher and associate lecturer in music technology. I am a white male usually with a bushy beard, eccentric clothing, and a beaming smile!

My PhD looks at "The Affordances of Sonic Interaction Design in Creating Accessible Narrative and Navigation Experiences in Virtual Video Game Environments", supervised by Dr Natanya Ford and Prof Tom Mitchell. We're exploring how we can navigate accessibility in games from a sonic perspective and how to provide inclusive design methodologies to achieve these outcomes.

I collaborate with first and second year students on the Introduction to Audio Programming and Research and Practice in Creative Technology modules. We learn about audio programming principles in C++ in IAP and delve into the depths of academic research, literature and methods surrounding our favourite topics in RPCT!

I also supervise Final Year Projects for our 3rd year students.

My supervision surrounds the following topics:

  • Sonic Interaction
  • Spatial Audio
  • Perceptive Audio Evaluation
  • Game Audio and Sound Design
  • Accessible Design

I take a dialogic, collaborative, and slightly whimsical approach to supervision, seeking to make lasting efforts in academic study through developing lifelong interests in topics and strong networking relationships for the future.

Away from academia, I am a working musician, accessibility advocate and gamer. I create and play music in multiple bands, ranging from intergalactic hyperpop and math rock drenched in emo, to tongue-in-cheek PhD-punk and heartfelt indie rock.

As a neurodivergent, colour deficient gamer, accessibility in games is a strong passion of mine, so you'll find me talking about and sharing the awesome work, people and stories from within Game Accessibility and complaining about how I cannot tell the difference between your red and green characters!

I am currently British Sign Language trained to Level 1 and also pursuing further accreditation in WAI-ARIA Web Accessibility.
