About me

Patrick has expertise in construction management (CM), project management (PM), and quantity surveying (QS) research, practice and teaching. He is a research-active academic with over 200 publications in leading built environment, occupational health and safety (H&S), and interdisciplinary journals and conferences. Besides his main research interest - occupational H&S, he is also interested in digital construction,  sustainable construction, procurement and project management. His research work has benefited from funds (over £2 million) from organisations including the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Innovate UK, Lloyds Register Foundation, UK Health and Safety Executive, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Research Trust, United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), Council of Heads of Built Environment (CHOBE), Academy of Medical Sciences, British Council, and Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology. He led (as Principal Investigator) a consortium of 10 industry and academic institutions on an EPSRC funded project to develop a novel web-based application for design for safety.

Patrick is a reviewer for research funders (e.g. EPSRC, Australian Research Council, and British Council) and several journals (e.g. Safety Science, Automation in Construction, and Construction Management and Economics) and conferences (e.g. Association of Researchers in Construction Management and CIB W099 Conferences). He also acts as external examiner for PhD candidates and a postgraduate course.

Patrick has delivered invited talks and contributed to panel discussion at major academic and practitioner events including conferences (e.g., organised by the Commonwealth Association of Surveying and Land Economy (CASLE), and Association of Project Safety (APS)) and seminar/webinar/workshop (e.g., organised by IOSH Southwest branch, B&CE, academic institutions in UK and beyond).  He serves/has served in several editorial capacities including Associate Editor for Safety Science, Associate Editor for Heliyon Engineering/Civil Engineering, Associate Editor for ICE Management, Procurement and Law, and member of editorial board for Journal of Safety Research. He contributed to the International Construction Measurement Standards (ICMS) as a member of the standard setting committee and as a co-author of the standards.  

Patrick has worked in academic posts within construction and project management at The University of Manchester, City University London, University of Wolverhampton, University of West London and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He has also worked in QS and CM roles within the construction industry. While working in the construction industry, he developed commercial digital tools for construction cost estimating, resources extraction, and construction cash flow forecasting.

Patrick has served in several academic leadership/management roles including: Deputy School Head of Research and Departmental Research Ethics Chair at University of University of Manchester; MSc programme leader at UWE; and MSc programme director at City University London. He is currently Co-Director of the Centre for Advanced Built Environment Research at UWE.

Patrick holds a PhD in Construction Project Management from the University of Wolverhampton, for which he studied the H&S impact of features of construction projects and eventually developed a digital H&S risk management toolkit. He also holds a PGCert. (with Distinction) in Academic Practice from City University London, BSc. (First Class Honours) in Building Technology from KNUST, Fellowship of the UK Higher Education Academy, and chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Building.
