About me

This year at UWE Bristol, I am taking over the Associate Director role in Design Communication (0.5) with operational oversight and strategic care for undergraduate Graphic Design and Illustration, to cover for a colleague on sabbatical, and retaining the Programme Leadership for MA Graphic Arts (0.5).

At the Open College of the Arts, where I have been involved in teaching and course writing for online open access degrees in Graphic Design and Visual Communication, I have been able to reduce my commitment for the year.

I have an extensive portfolio of consultancy work, programme reviews, and validations, that has allowed me to work with colleagues at the Open University and their partners across the country, plus UCA Farnham, Falmouth University, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, University of Northampton, University of the West of Scotland, and University of Lincoln. I am an experienced undergraduate and postgraduate external examiner, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Outside of higher education I continue to work in the voluntary sector with communities and local government, to instigate grant funded projects and enhancements in community public space. One such project was the building of a large wildlife pond (2018) and the design of signage to zone a wildlife area (2022).

My research interests and practice, rooted within photography, have broadened over the years. I curated a series of public talks called ‘Shifting Screens: Conversations on Motion Graphics’ held at Arnolfini, Bristol, February 2020. Through my earlier years I exhibited large format photographs in the UK and Europe. You can see this work at: www.stephenmonger.com

I first started teaching at UWE in 2003.
