About me

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with a postgraduation in Rehabilitation of Built Heritage from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Aveiro. Currently, I am a Senior Lecturer in Smart and Resilient Cities and Structures at the College of Arts, Technology and Environment (CATE) of UWE Bristol and an invited Associate Professor at the University of Coimbra. I am also a Co-Editor-in-Chief of GeoHazards, a multidisciplinary journal devoted to theoretical and applied research across the whole spectrum of geomorphological hazards, and a Section Editor-in-Chief of Fire, a wide-spectrum journal about the science, policy, and technology of fires and how they interact with communities and the environment.

Ranked three times among the 2% top-cited scientists in the world by Elsevier BV and Stanford University (2021, 2022 and 2023), I am the author of more than one hundred and seventy scientific and technical publications, including more than 70 articles in international peer-reviewed SCI journals. According to Scopus, my h-index is 23 (h-index = 27 in Google Scholar), with 1,662 citations (2,637 in Google Scholar). I have participated in eight R&D projects (four ongoing) and am currently leading one CATE College Building Research project aimed at investigating the use of VR environments to simulate pedestrian evacuation in urban areas after an earthquake and an MIT Portugal research project dedicated to the development of a framework to assessment multi-hazard risks in urban areas.

Area of expertise

My academic activity has been dedicated to studying the structural vulnerability of historical buildings and urban areas to natural and anthropogenic hazards, particularly earthquakes, fires, floods, and landslides. More recently, I have focused on the interaction between different hazards and physical and social vulnerability, both in the context of single, and compound and cascading hazards.
