About me

*I am always keen to hear from students interested in doing an MRes or PhD in my lab and welcome enquiries from self-funded UK, EU and International students

I am a red blood cell biologist with specific expertise in the in vitro generation of red blood cells from stem cell precursors (the process of erythropoiesis), an area in which I have published more than 35 papers. I employ CRISPR mediated gene editing and other genetic manipulation tools of primary haematopoietic cells and immortalised erythroblast cell lines, generating novel phenotypes in order to study a variety of aspects of erythroid cell biology in health and disease. I am interested in mechanisms that disrupt biogenesis of the red blood cell membrane in haemolytic and dyserythropoeitic anemias, the role of phosphorylation and mechanosensors in regulation of red blood cell deformability, reticulocyte maturation, host cell protein involvement in malaria parasite invasion and increasingly red blood cell interactions with other cell types.

I also work closely with colleagues within NHS Blood & Transplant. Recent collaborations have resulted in the establishment of two new blood group systems (Er in 2022 and MAL 2024) with wide international media coverage. I have strong collaborations with researchers at the University of Bristol where I remain an Honorary Research fellow and am co-founder of Scarlet Therapeutics - a Bristol based start up biotechnology company developing novel stem cell derived red blood cell therapeutics.
