About me

I am a Full Professor of Computer Science at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK. My research focuses on intelligent, secure  and distributed systems, with particular emphasis on developing advanced software processes and methodologies for modern systems engineering. I leverage emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, Internet of Things (IoTs), blockchain and cloud/edge computing to address complex, real-world callenges.

My earlier work spans participatory sensing, big data management and analytics, cross-domain system integration (systems of systems), and system engineering processes, forming a strong foundation for my current interdisciplinary research.
A key dimension of my work is its application to digital urban governance and sustainable smart cities. Since 2009, I have collaborated extensively with European cities through a range of international projects, contributing to innovative approaches for building resilient, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable urban futures. I also lead the Smart Cities research theme within the Computer Science Research Centre (CSRC) at UWE.

I have a strong track record of securing and contributing to large-scale, externally funded collaborative research and innovation projects, including:

-FP6 Health-e-Child (integrated health informatics),

-FP6 HUMBOLDT (geo-spatial data harmonisation),

-FP7 LifeWatch (biodiversity digital infrastructure - preparatory phase),

-FP7 Urban API as Co-PI (digital participatory governance through 2D/3D visualisation/simulation tools),

-FP7 DECUMANUS as Co-PI (remote sensing for environmental and climate change applications),

-H2020 Smarticipate as UWE Project manager (open data, 2D/3D visualisation and digital participatory governance platform),

-H2020 CURE as Co-PI (remote sensing for cross-thematic applications for urban resilience),

-Horizon Europe GREENGAGE as UWE Project manager (citizen observatories, remote sensing, net-zero climate and environment),

-Horizon Europe CLMS-Cities as UWE Project manager (CO2 emissions monitoring using Copernicus and in-situ data),

-Horizon DUT/UKRI SASMAP-15MC as Co-I (A systems approach to sahred mobility, accessibility and proximity for 15-minute city),

-Innovate UK KTP project between UWE and WASE ltd as academic advisor (sustainable waste management through soft sensing), and

-British Council ISPF DigiCaRe (co-designing gender-responsive and care-aware mobility solutions).

I teach across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and supervise both undergraduate dissertations and doctoral research. I welcome enquiries from prospective PhD candidates interested in my research areas.

In addition to my academic roles, I actively contribute to the wider research community by serving on scientific committees for international conferences, acting as a reviewer for leading journals, evaluating research proposals for UK funding bodies, and working as an expert monitor for the European Commission.

I am actively engaged in developing new research partnerships and externally funded initiatives, and I welcome opportunities to collaborate with academic, public, and industrial partners worldwide.
