About me
As a professor, my main focus is on research and research leadership and supervision. I am currently Director of Studies for 2 PhD students I was the co-ordinator for the AHRC-funded 3D3 (Digital Design, Arts and Media) Centre for Doctoral Training, a partnership with Plymouth and Falmouth and negotiated UWE's membership of the South, West and Wales 2 Doctoral Training Partnership. I have wide-ranging research interests in the cultural and creative industries. My particular focus and expertise is in the following areas: British cinema and television; the construction of masculinities; film noir, stars and stardom (and celebrity culture); and media industries and media production cultures, especially the role of the film producer. I have led several research projects, and just complted a third iteration of a detailed study of the film and television industries in Bristol. My most recent monograph is ‘Sean Connery: Stardom and National Identity' (2022) and I have just completed co-editing three collection on media industries and place: 'The Politics of Place: Space and Location in European Screen Industries' (Palgrave), 'Media Industries and Cities: Perspectives, Geopolitics and Transformations' and 'Locating Media Industries: Spaces, Places, Platforms' - both for Routledge. I am currently updating 'The Historical Dictionary of Film Noir' and working on two monographs: The UK's Public Service Broadcasters and the Nations and Regions and the Political Economy of the Natural History genre.
