About me
AARON SCHUMAN is an artist, photographer, writer, curator and educator. He received a BFA in Photography & Art History from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and an MA in Humanities and Cultural Studies from the London Consortium (Birkbeck College / TATE / ICA / Architectural Association). Having assisted various artists and photographers - including Annie Leibovitz and Wolfgang Tillmans - Schuman has pursued a career as an artist, writer and curator since 2000. His photographic work has been exhibited internationally - at institutions such as Tate Modern, the Institute of Contemporary Arts London, Hauser & Wirth, Christie's, The Royal Photographic Society, The Centre for British Photography, Ethnographic Museum Krakow, Format Festival, Fotobok Festival Oslo, Micamera Milan and elsewhere - and is held in many public and private collections including that of MoMA, the British Library, the V&A National Art Library, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and TATE. Schuman is the author of numerous critically-acclaimed monographs - HEFT (Grain Projects, 2024, in collaboration with The Gaia Foundation), SONATA (MACK), cited as one of 2022's "Best Photobooks" and long-listed for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2023; SLANT (MACK), cited as one of 2019’s “Best Photobooks” by The Guardian, Internazionale, Photoeye and more; and FOLK (NB), cited as one of 2016’s “Best Photobooks” by The Guardian, TIME and Photo-Eye, and longlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2017. Schuman has contributed writings to many recent books including Borderland (Witty Books), On the Verge (Void), Conversations on Photography (Kehrer), Keeper of the Hearth: Picturing Roland Barthes' Unseen Photograph (Schilt), Aperture Conversations: 1985-Present (Aperture), Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins (Prestel), Alec Soth: Gathered Leaves (MACK), Vision Anew (University of California Press), The Photographer's Playbook (Aperture), and Storyteller: The Photographs of Duane Michals (Prestel), amongst many others. He also regularly contributes both photography and writing to publications such as Frieze, ArtReview, Aperture, Foam, TIME, Granta, 1000 Words, Magnum Online, the British Journal of Photography and more. Additionally, Schuman has curated several major exhibitions, including "In Progress” (Royal Photographic Society), “Indivisible: New American Documents” (Fotomuseum Antwerp), “In Appropriation" (Houston Center for Photography), “Other I: Soth, WassinkLundgren, Sassen” (Hotshoe London), and “Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs” (FotoFest). In 2014, Schuman served as Curator of Krakow Photomonth 2014 - entitled "Re:Search" the exhibition programme featured Trevor Paglen, Taryn Simon, David Campany, Jason Fulford, Clare Strand, Forensic Architecture and more. In 2018, Schuman served as Curator of JaipurPhoto Festival 2018, presented at UNESCO World Heritage Sites throughout the city. Schuman was the founder and editor of the online photographic journal, SeeSaw Magazine (2004-14). He is Associate Professor of Photography & Visual Culture and Programme Leader of MA Photography at UWE Bristol.
