About me

AARON SCHUMAN is an artist, writer, editor and curator based in the United Kingdom.  He received a BFA in Photography and Art History from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1999, and an MA in Humanities and Cultural Studies from the University of London's London Consortium (Birkbeck College / TATE / ICA London / Architectural Association) in 2003.  Having assisted various artists and photographers - most notably, Annie Leibovitz and Wolfgang Tillmans - Schuman has pursued a career as an artist, writer, editor and curator since 2000​. His photographic work has been exhibited internationally – at institutions such as Tate Modern, the Institute of Contemporary Arts - ICA (London), Hauser & Wirth Somerset, Christie's (London / New York), and elsewhere – and is held in many public and private collections.  Schuman is the author of “FOLK” (NB Books, 2016) - which was named one of 2016’s “Best Photobooks” by Sean O'Hagan (The Guardian), Alec Soth (Photo-Eye) and Jason Fulford (TIME), and was longlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2017 - and he has contributed texts to many recent books including “Aperture Conversations: 1985 to the Present” (Aperture, 2018), “Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins” (Prestel, 2018), “George Rodger: Nuba & Latuka—The Colour Photographs” (Prestel, 2017), “Alec Soth: Gathered Leaves” (MACK, 2015), “Vision Anew” (University of California Press, 2015), “The Photographer's Playbook” (Aperture, 2014), and “Storyteller: The Photographs of Duane Michals” (Prestel, 2014), amongst many others.  Schuman also regularly contributes to magazines such as Frieze, ArtReview, Aperture, Foam, Hotshoe, TIME, the British Journal of Photography, and more.  Additionally, Schuman has curated several major exhibitions, including “Indivisible: New American Documents” (FOMU Antwerp, 2016), “Mixtape” (Riga Photomonth, 2016), “In Appropriation’ (Houston Center for Photography, 2012), “Other I: Alec Soth, WassinkLundgren, Viviane Sassen” (Hotshoe Gallery London, 2011), and “Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs” (FotoFest, 2010).  In 2014, Schuman served as Curator of Krakow Photomonth 2014 – entitled “Re:Search”, the main programme featured major exhibitions by Taryn Simon, Trevor Paglen, Jason Fulford, Clare Strand, Walker Evans & David Campany, Thomas Keenan & Eyal Weizman and others.  In 2018, Schuman served as Curator of JaipurPhoto Festival 2018 - entitled “Homeward Bound” the main programme featured exhibitions by Salvatore Vitale, Nola Minolfi, Terje Abusdal, Arko Datto, Tereza Zelenkova, John Maclean and others.  Schuman was also the founder and editor of SeeSaw Magazine (2004-2014), and is Programme Leader of the MA Photography programme at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol).  His forthcoming monograph, "SLANT", will be published by MACK in May 2019.  For more information, please visit:​
