About me

AARON SCHUMAN is an artist, photographer, writer and curator based in the United Kingdom. He received a BFA in Photography and Art History from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1999, and an MA in Humanities and Cultural Studies from the London Consortium (Birkbeck College / TATE / ICA London / Architectural Association) in 2003. Having assisted various artists and photographers - including Annie Leibovitz and Wolfgang Tillmans - Schuman has pursued a career as an artist, writer and curator since 2000. His photographic work has been exhibited internationally – at institutions such as Tate Modern, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), Hauser & Wirth, Christie's (London/New York), and elsewhere – and is held in many public and private collections including that of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the British Library, the V&A National Art Library, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and TATE. Schuman is the author of two monographs: “SLANT” (MACK) was cited as one of 2019’s “Best Photobooks” by numerous photographers, critics and publications, including The Guardian, Internazionale, Photoeye and more, and has been exhibited at 333 Gallery (London), Oslo Photography Festival 2019, and the Photographic Museum of Humanity. “FOLK” (NB) was named one of 2016’s “Best Photobooks” by The Guardian (Sean O'Hagan), TIME (Jason Fulford), and Photo-Eye (Alec Soth), and was longlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2017. Schuman has contributed writings to many recent books including “Conversations on Photography” (Kehrer, 2021), “Aperture Conversations: 1985-Present” (Aperture, 2018), “Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins” (Prestel, 2018), “George Rodger: Nuba & Latuka” (Prestel, 2017), “Alec Soth: Gathered Leaves” (MACK, 2015), “Vision Anew” (University of California Press, 2015), “The Photographer's Playbook” (Aperture, 2014), and “Storyteller: The Photographs of Duane Michals” (Prestel, 2014), amongst many others.  He also regularly contributes to magazines such as Frieze, ArtReview, Aperture, Foam, Hotshoe, TIME, the British Journal of Photography, and more. Additionally, Schuman has curated several major exhibitions, including ‘In Progress” (Royal Photographic Society, 2021), “Indivisible: New American Documents” (FOMU Antwerp, 2016), “In Appropriation’ (Houston Center for Photography, 2012), “Other I: Alec Soth, WassinkLundgren, Viviane Sassen” (Hotshoe Gallery London, 2011), and “Whatever Was Splendid: New American Photographs” (FotoFest, 2010).  In 2014, Schuman served as Curator of Krakow Photomonth 2014 – entitled “Re:Search”, the main programme featured major exhibitions by Taryn Simon, Trevor Paglen, Jason Fulford, Clare Strand, Walker Evans, Forensic Architecture and others.  In 2018, Schuman served as Curator of JaipurPhoto Festival 2018, presented at UNESCO World Heritage Sites throughout the city.
