About me
I have a Professional Doctorate in Criminal Justice which explores the use of emotional intelligence in police risk assessment of domestic incidents. I am currently an Associate Director of Policing at the University of the West of England, UK, overseeing the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship and other College of Policing partnership programmes with Avon and Somerset Police.
A former Senior Probation Officer, my operational expertise is in the field of risk assessment and management of high risk of harm offenders and working in multi-agency environments towards desistance strategies and public protection arrangements.
Area of expertise
My research interests are in trauma informed practice within the high risk of harm environment of domestic abuse and sexual offending. I also research the impact of trauma on criminal justice practitioners. As an ex practitioner, I see myself as a 'pracademic' with a special interest in how role of pracademics enhance teaching in police education.
I have a growing number of publications, most recently as co editor of the book: McCartan et al., (2025) Developing and Implementing a Public Health and Criminological Approach to Tackling Sexual Abuse: Prevention, Treatment and Integration. Palgrave Macmillan (part of Springer Nature)
Other books are Eason and Starr (Eds.) (2024) The University Beat: Critical Reflections on the Delivery of Police Education in England and Wales. Palgrave Macmillan (part of Springer Nature) and Eason (2023) A Police Officers Guide to Academic Research, Palgrave Macmillan.
