About me
I am Professor and Director of the Centre for Appearance Research at UWE Bristol. Before joining UWE, I held academic posts at the University of Colorado (Colorado Springs), Oregon State University (Cascades), and the University of Oregon (Central Oregon Programs). I earned my doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of California Santa Cruz and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in sport psychology at the University of California Los Angeles.
My research examines how media affect girls' and young women's body image as well as protective factors such as physical activity and sport participation. More specifically, I study how girls and young women are affected by sexual objectification and sexualization in a myriad of ways from body image and psychological well-being to school functioning. I am also interested in understanding how to cultivate embodiment and positive body image. I examine these issues from a sociocultural perspective and am especially interested in how social identities (e.g., gender, race) shape experience.
I am committed to sharing psychological science with the public and, therefore, regularly provide media interviews, write articles for lay audiences, and give talks and presentations to the public. I also serve on the editorial board for the journals Body Image and Emerging Adulthood. In addition, I am past Associate editor for Sex Roles and past Consulting Editor for Psychology of Women Quarterly.
