About me
Originally joined UWE as an Admissions Officer in 2005 and have since then been promoted to new roles that have included Head of Partnerships (AIR), Head of Operations (SSPS), Strategy and Planning Manager (SPS) and lately Business Improvement Manager SJP). Roles outside of the University have included Senior Lecturer in Business and in Further Education (teaching HE in FE), Personnel Manager in various large multi-national retail organisations and a Community Youth Worker (in the north east UK).
As a Business Improvement Manager my primary objective is to improve the way the university works in a business as usual context. This involves timed bound process review events using the premise of the 5E's Lean Philosophy of Establish, Explore, Envisage, Experiment and Embed. It is an approach to change that focusses on across the board improvement using a bottom up approach. Providing staff ownership and licence to innovate within their roles and with new processes developed by them and that contain feedback mechanisms that demonstrate that their ideas are working. This approach maximises value by removing waste, motivates staff through their involvement and measures return on investment whilst delivering un-imagined personal and professional opportunities within the sphere of project and change management.
In a nutshell I lead the review teams who together zero in on the issues presented, determine root cause, models the process, develop solution requirements pathways and adopt resolutions that balances time, cost, and scope constraints whilst assessing the impact of them. This requires me on behalf of the team to acquire buy-in from the sponsors and stakeholders, document new functional and technical requirements, help set priorities, track the development to ensure that the requirements are met, and measure and report on the resultant change through a benefits and recommendation package. I facilitate resultant meetings, resolve conflict, understand technical jargon and interpret this, write clearly, present effectively, and advocate for all sides. Most importantly I facilitate the development of a team ethos and facilitate change within the process improvement mechanism.
I lead present reviews within the Student Journey Programme which is a services of projects that are intrinsically linked by transforming the way we work whilst also enhancing the student journey. I presently lead on the Investors in People Project. Other review topics have included External Examiners, International Travel, Money, Advice and Finance, Professional Practice Office, Timeouts and Withdrawals, Timetabling, UK Visa and Immigration, Degree Apprentices, Connected Working
I am a UWE Dignity at work Advisor, trained Mediator and Mentor. I am a member of the Association of University Administrators and of UWE's Womens Forum. I hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching in HE & FE and in Mediation.
