About me

Carlos Cifuentes is Professor of Human-Centred Robotics and AI at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), UK, and Deputy Director of the £13.4M UK-funded VIVO Hub (2024–2030). He previously served as Associate Professor of Human-Robot Interaction at BRL (2022–2026) and as Assistant Professor at Universidad del Rosario and the Colombian School of Engineering Julio Garavito (2016–2022), where he founded and led the Centre for Biomechatronics. He completed his PhD and postdoctoral research at the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil, in 2015.

With over 15 years of experience, Carlos has led multidisciplinary research on the design, development, evaluation, and translation of robotic technologies for rehabilitation, assistance, and human augmentation. Working closely with clinicians, healthcare providers, and industrial partners, his research focuses on developing human-centred robotic and AI solutions to improve health, wellbeing, and quality of life. His work has addressed a wide range of clinical and societal challenges, including cardiovascular disease, neurological conditions, dementia, healthy ageing, musculoskeletal disorders, and neurodiversity.

Since 2021, he has served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine, and since 2023 for both ICRA and IROS. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications and is internationally recognised for his contributions to human-robot interaction, assistive robotics, and AI-driven healthcare technologies.
