About me

Born in the Canadian prairies and raised in Vancouver, BC I obtained my undergraduate and master's degrees at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia.  I received my PhD in 1996 from the University of Kentucky for a thesis on the political ecology of water management in post-communist Bulgaria.

I have travelled extensively in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia but these days work primarily in East Africa, the Peruvian Andes and the UK.

I am married with two daughters and enjoy holidaying abroad with my family or taking weekend trips to European capitals. I also have extensive mountaineering, ski touring and rock climbing experience, mostly in Europe and North America.

Area of expertise

Resource economics and policy; critical political ecology; human-environment relations, water resources, forest resources
