About me
I am currently a Professor in Health and Environment in the Centre for Research in Biosciences and the Institute for Bio-Sensing Technology at the University of the West of England, Bristol. I have a passion for Teaching, Learning and Research and I contribute to a number of environmental programmes and modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department of Applied Sciences. I have over 17 years of experience in developing applied technology platforms at the life science/environmental/physical science interface for addressing real-world problems. My current research activities occupy the interdisciplinary cross-cutting themes addressing the Grand Challenges associated with Health, Agri-Food, Water and Environment.
I work extensively with UK small-medium enterprises and high-technology partners specialising in driving interdisciplinary science and innovation from laboratory through to real-world application, maximising Impact through Research. I also work extensively with students and try to use my research to inspire individuals about the power of science - maximising Teaching through Research.
Area of expertise
I am internationally known for pioneering the use of fluorescence techniques for the characterisation of waste and surface waters and I have an emerging international reputation for the development, characterisation and application of novel antimicrobials for bio-control and biological decontamination. I am an active reviewer for world-leading international peer review journals (15), including Water Research (impact factor 5.315) and Environmental Science and Technology (impact factor 5.228), and Biosensors and Bioelectronics (impact factor 5.602). In addition, I regularly review for RCUK specifically BBSRC, EPSRC and NERC, in addition to nationally important learned societies e.g. Royal Society of Edinburgh. Internationally, I regularly review major research proposals from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (over 20 proposals over the last year 5 years) and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (Irish Government). The Foundation for Science and Technology is the public research funding agency of Portugal which selects and distributes research funds for a wide range of scientific fields of research. I serve as a panel member for the Environment and Global Change assessment panel for the Portuguese Scientific Council for Natural and Environmental Sciences. I was recently appointed to the Editorial Boards for the Water and Environmental Journal (Wiley) and Sensing and Imaging – An International Journal (Springer). I am the co-editor for a book entitled “Aquatic Organic Matter Fluorescence” (Cambridge University Press, Energy & Environmental Series) which is currently in press and due to published in 2014. I was recently invited to give a presentation to senior UK Government Home Office officials (Office for Science & Counter Terrorism) concerning the potential for delivering or improving the UK’s capability for biological decontamination. Home office funded research that we have completed in this area is regarded as nationally leading and has been used to inform UK policy and capability in this important area.
At present I lead a modest research grouping within the Centre for Research in Biosciences and I have a track record of successfully managing and delivering complex research projects throughout my academic life (see research funding highlights). I am a leader in delivering impact through research by the development of Industry-Academic Partnerships. Currently, I am an active and influential member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Institute of Biosensing Research and the Management Group for the Centre for Research in Biosciences.
