About me

I am a graduate from Reading University in Chemistry with a PhD from Liverpool University. I joined UWE in September 2016 after over 30 years of working the industrial research laboratories of multi-national companiesBAE Systems and Courtaulds. At the early stages of my career I worked on understanding the structure and properties of materials and how those properties were impacted by processing. In later years I was the Programme Manager for the Head Office funded Reserach activities.

Area of expertise

Industry engagement

Whilst at BAE Systems I worked with other partner companies in defining and delivering proposals and projects. These were done in conjunction with grant funding bodies such as Innovate UK or the European Commission. My experience covers the forming of a consortium,  the writing of the technical aspects of the work through to pulling together the business cases under pinning the bid.

Chemical analysis

My on composites for BAE Systems concentrated upon the definition of the state of a material, ensuring it had been processed to the required standard. This involved the development of test methods using such techniques as Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis and a range of chromatographic and spectroscopy tests.

Engagement with Funding bodies

I have experience of working and helping to set strategies with a number of funding bodies. These include RCUK and the MoD. I have experience of presenting technology to senior stakeholders, ensuring that the desired message is communicated. I was a member of the organising committee of the BAE Systems Conference Innovation Live.‚Äč
