About me

I am Professor of English Literature, and have been teaching and researching at the University of the West of England since 2006. Over the years I've had numerous roles, including Associate Head of Department, and I'm currently Director of Research for the School of Arts, and I was the Unit of Assessment lead for the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2021.

Area of expertise

My research at UWE focuses on the American essayist, poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, about whom I've published one book, numerous essays and given even more conference papers at various places around the world. Most recently I've been thinking about Emerson, metaphor and cognition, and my next book, Emerson's Metaphors, should be published in 2023 (Lexington Books). I have also been researching pedagogies of close reading. My student guide, Close Reading: The Basics, was published by Routledge in 2018.

I am open to enquiries about doctoral supervision. I am particularly interested in supervising PhDs which concern Nineteenth Century American Literature and Intellectual History, especially Transcendentalism. I am also interested in supervising theses on Metaphor and literary studies, and Close Reading. PhD applicants should consider the South, West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership, which competitively funds projects to be co-supervised across two institutions. I am happy to work with applicants to strengthen their bids for this funding.
