About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of the West of England, with an interdisciplinary background spanning psychology, economics and data governance. My research and teaching focus on how people understand, manage and make decisions with complex and sensitive data, particularly within policy, health and social science contexts.

Research

My research centres on data governance, statistical disclosure control and Trusted Research Environments (TREs). I am internationally recognised for developing psychologically informed and ethically grounded approaches to data governance, including work on qualitative and mixed-methods disclosure risk. My work directly informs policy, training and digital infrastructure used by national and international statistical agencies.

I am Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on several major funded projects, including:

  • TREvolution (MRC, £6.7m) – Co-Investigator and Work Package Lead

  • SACRO – Semi-Automated Checking of Research Outputs (DARE UK, £500k) – Co-Investigator

  • ODYSSEY (ESRC Future Data Services) – Optimizing Data Professional Success (ESRC, £160k) – Principal Investigator

  • Future Data Services Strategic Fellowship (ESRC, £100k) – Named Fellow

I regularly collaborate with organisations such as the Office for National Statistics, Eurostat, UNECE and national statistical agencies across Europe and beyond.

I am also experienced in evaluation methodologies and have provided impact analysis for regions and areas, I am leading the economic analysis of Inequality for the Brunel Centre for Regional Economic Resilience (Research England, £4.5million).

Teaching and Learning

I teach across economics, research methods and data governance, and supervise undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral researchers. My pedagogic approach integrates behavioural insight and applied practice, helping students engage with real-world issues of risk, ethics and decision-making.

I have led the design and delivery of Safe Researcher Training programmes that are now used nationally and internationally, and I embed inclusive teaching practices to support students who are anxious about quantitative methods. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and hold a PGCAPP with Distinction.

Knowledge Exchange and Impact

My work sits at the interface of academia, government and professional practice. I lead large-scale knowledge-exchange programmes that focus on building systems, standards and communities, rather than one-off consultancy. My research underpins multiple REF 2027 Impact Case Studies across Business, Computing, Philosophy and Health.

My work has influenced data governance practice in the UK, Europe, North and South America, Australia and South Asia.

Leadership and Citizenship

I am:

  • Co-Founder of DRAGoN (Data Research, Access and Governance Network)

  • Co-Chair of SDC Reboot, a national MRC-funded network

  • Work Package Lead on TREvolution and SACRO

  • A member of the ESRC Peer Review College

  • An active contributor to the UNECE Expert Group on Statistical Data Confidentiality

I have a strong commitment to mentoring and inclusive leadership, particularly supporting early-career researchers and neurodivergent staff into academic careers and funded PhDs.
