About me
I am Senior Lecturer in Public Health at the School of Health and Social Wellbeing, the University of the West of England. I did my MSc and PhD in Sociology at the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies, the University of Bristol. I am Co-Editor for Health: Sage Journals (sagepub.com) and Review Editor for Frontiers in Sociology (Race and Ethnicity).
In my doctoral dissertation, (Transnational Islam and the Integration of Turks in Great Britain, 2021, Palgrave Macmillan), I developed several avenues of theoretical and empirical inquiry, including the novel theoretical approach, 'integration as a three-way process and negotiation'. This offers original insights into how national citizenship models can be extended and renewed to cover cross-border mobility. My works have been published in top-tier peer-reviewed journals including, Ethnicities, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Identities, Politics and Religion, Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations, Insight Turkey, Journal of Nordic Migration Studies, and Journal of Global Analysis.
My research interests include migration, migrant integration and health; race, ethnicity, and health inequalities; political determinants of health; diversity, national identity, religion and health; and decolonizing education.
I am open to MSc and PhD supervision.
Currently, I am working on three projects:
PI: Health and Migrant Integration in the UK: how does migrants’ health influence their integration into the UK, 2024-2026 (Vice Chancellor’s Early Career Research (VC ECR) Award, UWE Bristol). This project aims to develop a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between health and migrant integration in the UK. This involves (1) investigating the conceptual relationship between health and migrant integration; (2) examining how macro-level factors (i.e. laws, policies, discourses) concerning migration and migrants influence the health of migrants and shape their integration into the wider society; and (3) exploring how migrants view the relationship between their health and integration process.
PI: Race and Health Inequalities in the UK: maximizing evidence for interventions aimed at reducing race-related health inequalities, 2023-2025, (New Starter Research (NSR) Fund, UWE Bristol). This project focuses on racism as a determinant of health; and explores if and how anti-racism struggles contribute to health equity in the UK.
Maximizing child road fatalities: evidence for action, Senior Researcher, 2024-2026 (The Road Safety Trust). Based on the original data that will be extracted from National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) (2019-2025), this joint project aims to develop a holistic understanding of the underlying risk factors for road fatalities in 0-17-year-olds in England, and the interventions needed for different groups to reduce the risk of child road death.
