About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Counselling Psychology and Co-Programme Leader for the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. I am an HCPC-accredited and BPS-chartered Counselling Psychologist, and for more than fifteen years I have worked across academic, research, training, and clinical settings. My scholarship focuses on psychotherapy processes and practitioner development, and I have been fortunate to collaborate with colleagues across the UK, Europe (including Greece, the Netherlands, and Germany), the United States, and internationally.

Since 2016 my research interests evolve around the development of psychological interventions for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the development of inclusive therapy practice for disabled people and people with chronic conditions. Using qualitative and mixed methods approaches, I have explored how people with MS experience the psychological interventions and mapped what they found helpful and unhelpful in them. This line of research led to the development of an integrative group psychological intervention MyMS-Ally whose feasibility and acceptability has been explored in a longitudinal pilot study.  The study was funded by the UWE Vice Chancellor's Early Career Researcher award. The findings emphasise that wellbeing extends beyond symptom management, that process matters more than content in therapeutic groups, and that psychological change is highly individual.

Building on this foundation, my current research explores ways to personalise psychological interventions for people with MS. A core commitment in my work is meaningful involvement of disabled people and those with chronic conditions at every stage of the research process, from co-design to dissemination. These participatory activities have been supported by UWE funding and are expanding to address stigma, ableism, accessibility, and the cultivation of inclusive clinical and research practices.

I am first supervisor for 10 professional doctorate projects in Counselling Psychology with six successfully completed professional doctorate projects. I am Editor-in-chief of the Qualitative Methods in Psychology Bulletin. I am a member of the Qualitative Methods in Psychology committee of the BPS and an ordinary member of the UK Local Committee of the Society for Psychotherapy Research.

I am delighted to be organising the 7th Joint EU-SPR and UK-SPR Conference, which will be hosted at UWE Bristol in September 2026. The focus of the conference is on Putting Psychotherapy Practice at the Heart of Research: Amplifying the Clients’ Voices. More information and registration details are available here.
