About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Counselling Psychology and Programme Leader of the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. I am an Accredited Practitioner Psychologist and Counselling Psychologist with HCPC and BPS. I have engaged in academic, research, training and clinical work over the last 15 years. My research focus has been on psychotherapy process and practitioners' development. I have explored the impact of financial crisis and COVID on mental health services and identity. I have collaborated with researchers from Greece, Netherlands, Germany, USA and other countries around the world.

Since 2016 my research interests evolve around the development of psychological interventions for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the development of inclusive therapy practice for disabled people and people with chronic conditions. Using qualitative and mixed methods approaches, I have explored how people with MS experience the psychological interventions and mapped what they found helpful and unhelpful in them. This line of research led to the development of an integrative group psychological intervention MyMS-Ally whose feasibility and acceptability has been explored in a longitudinal pilot study.  The study was funded by the Vice Chancellor's Early Career Researcher award. The conclusions have led to further development of the line of research within the Process Based Therapy framework. I actively engage the community of disabled people and people with chronic conditions into planning, conducting and disseminating my research projects. These activities have been funded by the PSRG research group through the ARISe scheme.

I am first supervisor for 10 professional doctorate projects in Counselling Psychology with four successfully completed professional doctorate projects. I have completed the Aurora programme.  I am Editor-in-chief of the Qualitative Methods in Psychology Bulletin. I am a member of the Qualitative Methods in Psychology committee of the BPS and an ordinary member of the UK Local Committee of the Society for Psychotherapy Research.
