About me

I am a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at UWE Bristol. Currently I'm the module leader for a third year module, the Psychology of Appearance of Embodiment.

I am also co-module leader for the Social Psychology & Individual Difference module on the MSc Conversion programme, where I lead the Social Psychology block. I teach on social psychology blocks across the undergraduate Psychology programme, and supervise undergraduate and Masters' student dissertations.

I am also an active researcher, affiliated with both the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) (having previously been a Senior Research Fellow at CAR) and the Psychological Sciences Research Group. In the field of body image and appearance, my research focuses on understanding the experiences of people with a range of visible differences (historically "disfigurement") and ways of supported affected individuals. I led a project (emanating from my DPhil work) developing a self-help mobile app based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), called ACT It Out. This is freely available to UK adults with any form of visible difference: https://visibledifferencesupporthub.com/act-it-out/.

I also led the evaluation of an Erasmus+ funded project to train healthcare professionals in supporting patients with appearance-affecting conditions. (Training resources available via actnow-erasmusproject.eu/)

I also specialise in the psychology of living with alopecia, having published widely on the topic and having collaborated with Alopecia UK on multiple projects. I am currently Director of Studies for an Alopecia UK-funded PhD to better understand peer support for people with alopecia.

My other research interests centre around masculinities and mental health, particularly in the context of peer support (how men help each other). I am currently involved in a collaborative project with Talk Club - a Bristol-based national charity - to evaluate Talk Club peer groups in men's prisons.

I also co-supervise PhD and professional doctorate candidates across the broader areas of mental health, masculinities and appearance.

Area of expertise

Peer support; Masculinities; Appearance-affecting conditions; Alopecia; Mental health; Public and Patient Involvement; Intervention development.

I am a pragmatist researcher with experience publishing multiple qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies.
