About me

Dr. Haixia Liu is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Early Career Researcher Development Award (2023–2025). She also served as Deputy Programme Leader for Undergraduate Computer Science (2022/2023).

She has secured external research funding as:

  • Principal Investigator on an Innovate UK-funded project in collaboration with a London-based SME, focusing on AI-driven predictive analytics for innovative design (2024–2025).

  • Co-Investigator on a UK government-funded Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project using sensors and machine learning to support sustainable development (2025–2028).

Before joining UWE as a Lecturer in Computer Science, she was working in industry as a Machine Learning Engineer and Software Engineer. 
 
She completed her PhD in Computer Science, specialising in computational creativity, with a focus on automatic idea generation and knowledge discovery from scientific publications using Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and Machine Learning methods.
 
Her research Interests are  Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Computational Creativity, Idea mining and novel idea computation,  Image Classification and Natural Language Processing (NLP). 
 
She is leading the module Machine Learning Algorithms in MSC AI Programme and supervising Undergraduate Projects of Computer Science and Business Computing&Software Engineering, Master Projects of Data Science and PhD project of Machine Learning and Robotics.
 
She has taught various modules such as Business Intelligence and Data Visualization, Business Intelligence and Data Mining, Biocomputation, Intelligent Systems, Foundations of Computing, Information Systems Development, Object Oriented Development, Computer Systems Architecture, Computer and Network Systems.
