About me

I am Doctor Hooman Foroughmand Araabi, Senior Lecturer in Urban Planning and Design. I joined UWE’s Department of Architecture and the Built Environment within the Faculty of Environment and Technology (FET) in 2017.

I am particularly interested in understanding and evaluating urban design and investigating its relationship to successful public spaces.

My particular approach to investigating these areas is what I have called critical creativity. Criticality allows rational judgments about contexts within which projects and theories function within sociopolitical frameworks. Creativity, on the other hand, seeks to find new processes and forms. More successful public spaces are thus created when criticality and creativity are aligned. My teaching ethos reflects this, allowing students to learn through critical appraisal of existing research and practices alongside creative discovery of their design potential.

I have a special interested in, and currently supervise PhD projects, researching inclusivity in the built environments, exploring critical theories in urban planning and design, governance of design, and urbanism in Iran and the Middle East.

Area of expertise

urban design theory, inclusivity, masterplanning, decolonising urbanism; beauty in urban design
