About me

Jessy Young has a range of experience of undertaking and delivering design education at universities and art schools across Europe including; Manchester School of Art; Leeds Beckett University; Bristol UWE; Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam; and the Design Academy Eindhoven.

In her role as a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of England Jessy Young, writes, organises and coordinates live projects for Graphic Design students, alongside Senior Lecturer and long-term collaborator Jen Conway. These projects are embedded within the local community and involve working with cultural, political and community-led organisations including; museums, radio stations, cinemas, community centres, unions, councils, galleries and archives.

Together Jessy and Jen have been instrumental in developing a curriculum that encourages graphic designers to work collaboratively in public locations, considering the social, performative and interactive potential of Graphic Design. Projects are designed to foster professional working practices, and to encourage critical reflection on the responsibility of a graphic designer in relation to their locale and audience.

Interested in the impact that Graphic Design has on society, both positive and negative, Jessy Young and Jen Conway are concerned with promoting life-long, sustainable, socially responsible and ethical practices.

Beyond the University Jessy has worked and studied in collaboration with Jen Conway since 2006. They work under the name Conway and Young and have a studio at Spike Island. Work consists of commissioned and self-initiated projects. Selected collaborators and commissioners include Leeds City Council, Bristol Biennial, Learning from Kilburn, The National Trust, Interval, Arnolfini, Hyde Park Picture House, Black Dogs Collective, Brave New Alps and the Feminist Archive South.
