About me

I am a Lecturer in Biomedical Science with a specialism in Haematology. My teaching spans BSc/MSci (Hons) and MSc Biomedical Science and BSc/MSci (Hons) Biological Sciences, of which I lead two modules (Research Skills and Current Issues in Applied Sciences).

Area of expertise

My research centres on the interaction between leukaemia cells and the bone marrow stroma. My PhD showed bidirectional damage of the bone marrow stroma and protection of leukaemic cells in a cell line/patient cell co-culture model. I am interested in the communication of leukaemia and stromal cells via cytokine secretion. This work involved collaboration with clinical partners at the Royal United Hospital, Bath and UWE colleagues Dr Jen May, Dr Liz Anderson and Dr Gareth Robinson.

As a post-doc I worked on projects investigating toxicity of electrochemically-activated solutions on skin and lung cells (Prof Darren Reynolds, Dr Robin Thorn), understanding hypoxia-induced signalling in microenvironment-driven pancreatic cancer cell adaptation (Dr Alex Greenhough), and shedding smart light on the effectiveness of chemotherapy for leukaemia using Raman Spectroscopy (Dr Jen May, Prof Tim Cox, Dr Kathryn Lamb-Riddell, Dr Mark Hansen, Prof Myra Conway).

My current research in the Centre for Research in Biosciences is continuing my interests in the leukaemia microenvironment and hypoxia. I am currently undertaking research into the leukaemic microenvironment 'secretome', with support of a Vice-Chancellor's Early Career Researcher (VC ECR) Award.
