About me

As Head of the Department of Education and Childhood, I bring together my 25 years as an educator and a leader to continue to drive forward the ongoing achievements of this highly successful department and to contribute to enhancing education across the university.

My own journey through Higher Education began with a History degree from Warwick University, with a scholarship year spent at the University of South Carolina. After a few years in industry, I retrained in Education, graduating from UWE Bristol and beginning my career as a Primary School Teacher. Over the following years, I took on a range of roles, including Educational Technology consultant, Local Education Authority Advisor, Senior Lecturer, Programme Leader, Associate Head of Department, and External Examiner. I also continued my own learning, gaining qualifications in Education and Higher Education and writing and co-editing.

I now lead our Education and Childhood Department, ranked 5th best in the UK for Education (Guardian University League table 2019). The department excels in Teacher Training Programmes, running highly successful courses in Early Years, Primary and Secondary Education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, and we have a thriving Early Childhood programme. We are currently growing our provision with a range of exciting, future-facing programmes.  This includes a new Education degree with specialisms in Digital Learning and Special Needs, and we have an International PGCE and a MA International Education in development, something that is as rewarding as it is challenging.
